Linnets dominate but its Llantwit who take the points

BARRY FC dominated their home game with Llantwit Major at Jenner Park last Saturday in one of the few Vale of Glamorgan Premier League matches to beat the weather.

But they ended up without a point when they eventually went down by 2 goals to 1.

The visitors got off to a perfect start with an opening minute strike from Julian Griffiths, firing from the edge of the box to give his team the lead.

The goal came so early and so quickly that many supporters were still finding their seats and those still coming through the gates thought that match was only just kicking off.

Barry fought to get back into the game and could have levelled a minute later when Matthew Davie"s well-struck shot was saved by the diving Llantwit goalkeeper, Jamie Evans.

Kevin Owens was the next to go close for the home side, firing narrowly wide midway through the first half.

It was Owens who was at the centre of the Barry equaliser early in the second half.

Controlling the ball just outside the Llantwit penalty area, he beat three men, only to see his shot come back off the post.

Fortunately for the Linnets, their top scorer Ben Taylor was the first to react to the loose ball and he netted to make it 1-1.

Sadly, Barry rested on their laurels and allowed Llantwit to attack, rather than chasing the game themselves.

Barry keeper Damian Lack found himself under serious pressure for the first time in the game and again showed himself to be an excellent shot-stopper.

However, he was at fault for the visitors" second goal as he misjudged David Bevan"s inswinging corner, to give Llantwit a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Once again in arrears, Barry again awoke to the danger, but this time it was too late to make amends.

Llantwit"s man of the match, goalkeeper Jamie Evans, was under constant pressure from the Barry attack, who peppered his goal with shots.

Among the best opportunities was a Christian Powell chip, which Evans pushed over the bar, while on another occasion, Evans didn"t even see the shot come towards him through a forest of players, saving with his face.

Barry"s final chance fell to Josh Mazey, who beat the offside trap, but fired over the bar, leading to a disappointing result from a match that Barry had bossed.

* The Linnets Lotto draw on Monday, February 27 wasn"t won, meaning that next Monday"s prize is £650. The numbers were 4, 5, 6, 10, 15 & 17.

Next week"s numbers are 1-16. The draw will take place at the Castle Hotel, Jewel Street, Barry, at 7.30pm.
