Lidl plan approved

PLANS to expand a Barry supermarket have been given the green light.

Cadoc councillors Neil and Anne Moore originally attacked German discount superstore Lidl's application to increase its Pencoetre village shop by around a third.

They said the fact that the company would need to purchase a nearby residential bungalow to achieve the development was "un-neighbourly" and would affect the enjoyment and amenities of the local residents".

However, Cllr Neil Moore said after the plan was approved at a recent meeting of the council's planning committee: "I think we have moved a long way forward since the original plans.

"We were concerned about the way Lidl operated its car park in the past. It was open to anyone to use."

Lidl applied to buy the bungalow, known as Oakwood, to construct a single storey extension along the south side of the store, increase car parking and create an external entrance/exit lobby.

Ten extra parking spaces will be available, increasing the amount of bays to 114, as well as seven disabled spaces.

Part of Lidl's planning permission is the provision of access gates and security measures, such as CCTV cameras, to reduce the use of the car park at night.
