THE announcement of a 163,000 Welsh Assembly Government funded Safe Routes To School scheme in Barry has been welcomed by Councillors Neil and Anne Moore and Vale of Glamorgan Assembly Member Jane Hutt.
Mrs Hutt said: "This important grant from the Assembly Government will address the dangers that children and young people face in crossing the busy link road to get to St Richard Gwyn School.
"With safety measures such as this, children will now have a safer route to school in Barry with wider benefits for the whole community."
Councillors Neil and Anne Moore said: "We are delighted that our campaign to make the streets safer leading up to this important crossing place for children in the Cadoc ward has been recognised by the Assembly Government and the Vale Council.
"We look forward to seeing the work commence with this 163,000 boost for our local community."
They added: "We would also like to congratulate the pupils of St Richard Gwyn, who put together the Safer Routes to School bid."
The cash comes as part of an investment of almost 1 million in local transport schemes in the Vale of Glamorgan.
As part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Transport Grant settlement for 2006-07 the Vale is set to benefit from
l 0.5 million for the construction of a roundabout at the Merrie Harrier and Cardiff Road bus lane scheme
l 50,000 for Barry Central Station
l 163,000 for a Safe Routes to School scheme at Sir Richard Gwyn Comprehensive school
