At your convenience, not!

IT'S a case of "make sure you go before you leave the house" - because you won't be able to go to the loo in Barry town centre, where there are NO public toilets.

The Vale council has given its word that there will be lavatories installed for shoppers and visitors as soon as the reconstruction of the town hall is completed.

That means a wait of a good few months - which is a very long time when you're bursting for the loo!

The closure of 100-year-old department store Dan Evans three weeks ago, and the more recent closure of the public toilets next to the Court Road car park, saw the end to Barry's public toilets.

Fed-up Gladstone Road resident Sylvia Klee contacted the Barry and District News and brought our attention to the problem.

Mrs Klee, 70, said she had brought up the issue of the lack of public toilets with the council last summer - when there were at least some facilities in the town centre.

"I think it's disgusting," she said.

"I don't see why the council can't put up some portable toilets - there's plenty of waste land near Merthyr Street.

"What's happening to our town? The tourist board urges people to come and visit Barry, but there are insufficient facilities for visitors.

"When I phoned the council in the summer, they told me the nearest public toilets are by Barry Dock station. People shouldn't have to travel down to Thompson Street.

"I met a lady in the street the other day who was looking for a public toilet. It was her first time in Barry and I wonder if she will come back. It's not leaving a good impression of the town.

"I live close to town, but I can't ask everyone who needs to use the loo to come back to my house!"
