Undefeated run comes to an end

BARRY FC 0 ST ATHAN 3

BARRY FC's undefeated run was ended last Saturday by a fit and organised St Athan side with championship aspirations.

The visitors, with just one loss to their name this campaign, started the better of the two teams and took an 11th minute lead through Dean Cleave.

Running on to a tidy through ball, the attacker appeared offside to the Barry men, but referee Paul Jenkins allowed play to continue, to the chagrin of the Jenner Park crowd, and Cleave finished well to give his side a valuable early advantage.

After coming from behind against Harrison Forse the previous weekend, the Barry team were unfazed by the early setback.

However, a sublime effort from Aaron Rogers soon made it 2-0 to St Athan, knocking the Linnets and their supporters for six.

Barry steadied the ship for the remainder of the half but did little to penetrate the visitors' defence before the break.

Despite the shortness of the interval, the Linnets seemed to be revitalised in the second 45 minutes, and went about chasing the game.

Mattie Davy, who had battled well in midfield, at one stage broke free and unleashed a right-footed shot that cruelly struck both posts before rebounding to safety.

Moments later, Ben Taylor took the ball past the out-racing St Athan goalkeeper Gareth Duncan, only to lose his footing at the crucial moment.

It soon appeared it was not to be Barry's day, when Davy, arguably the Linnets' man of the match, put the ball into his own net while chasing back to defend.

Barry went close in the dying minutes, again hitting the post, this time from a header, after a multitude of corners.

St Athan held on to their slightly flattering three-goal cushion, and took a prized three points away from a cold Jenner Park.

Barry attempt to bounce back straight away this weekend with a game against Colcot FC at the Buttrills, kick-off 2pm.
