Recycle your bicycle for youth training project

RESIDENTS have donated more than 200 bicycles to a local youth training project as part of the Vale of Glamorgan Council's'recycle your bicycle' initiative.

Residents were invited to donate their unwanted bicycles to the Barry-based recycling project in a Christmas newsletter, which was delivered to every home in the Vale.

And the results have been amazing!

The project provides local young people with training in bike repairs and maintenance to help enhance their job prospects and future training opportunities.

Once repaired, the bikes are sold to Vale residents to help fund the project.

Project Supervisor Wayne Mayor explained: "We have been overwhelmed by the response from residents this Christmas and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contacted us and donated a bike.

"We rely on donations to keep the project going."

To date, more than 56 young people have benefited from the project through work experience and the achievement of vocational skills.

Wayne added: "Over the next few months we will have repaired bikes of all sizes ready to be sold back into the community for as little as 5.

"Anyone can buy a bike from us, and we hope many residents will take advantage of our low prices."

Barry resident Bill Whitehouse donated two bicycles.

He said: "It's great to know that they'll be fixed up and sold on for someone else to use.

"There's very little wrong with the bikes so it would have been a real shame to just throw them away."
