Conductor takes his final bow from choir

ONE of Barry Male Voice Choir's most valuable and longstanding members made his departure after more than 40 years of service to the group.

Douglas Baxter joined the choir in 1964 as a chorister, and after spells as secretary and deputy conductor, he was appointed conductor in 1986.

Last week, at the choir's annual general meeting, he was made president of the choir.

Mr Baxter, who is 66 and lives in Dinas Powys, was also the conductor of the Barry Choral Society from 1975 until 2001.

A celebratory dinner was held in January at Barry's Masonic Hall as a tribute to Mr Baxter's contribution to the choir. More than 90 choristers, wives and guests attended, and Mr Baxter was presented with several gifts, including a recent framed photograph of the BMVC.

Mr Baxter said: "The dinner went very well and it was a happy occasion.

"Leaving the choir was something I had thought of doing for a while - 20 years as conductor is a long time.

"I can now concentrate on my two hobbies - travelling and making stained glass windows."

Mr Baxter described his "highs" with the choir as performing in big cathedrals, watching fellow choristers master difficult pieces, and seeing the choir develop over the years.

He said the "lows" were badly attended concerts, but said ultimately, the highs outweighed the lows.

John Davies, secretary of BMVC, said: "The choir would like to thank Douglas for all the enjoyment he has given them over the years.

"His efforts and determination have helped make the Barry Male Voice Choir what it is today. We hope that a new conductor will be appointed soon to continue the reputation."
