Thumbs-up for waterfront haven

EFFORTS to create a community haven at the Barry Waterfront development have been given the thumbs-up by one of the most senior figures in the Methodist church.

John Bell, vice president of the Methodist Church in the UK and Ireland, visited Barry last week.

Mr Bell, and his wife Joan, witnessed the initial stages of the construction of the super-church at the waterfront, which intends to bring the Methodist and United Reform Church under one roof.

Mr Bell, who travels the length and breadth of the country, and has witnessed similar schemes, said: "I am interested in seeing how the church, industry and the community relate with one another.

"What I have seen here is enormously encouraging. Everyone - the residents, development people and the councillors - is looking in the same direction and pulling together.

"The opportunities are tremendous, and all the signs are good. I wish the people of Barry every success in what looks to be a fantastic project."

Mr Bell met with Vale MP John Smith during his visit.
