Daves diet to help Ty Hafan

A BARRY man's attempt at a New Year's resolution has become a double mission.

For as well as aiming to lose a massive five stones in weight to preserve his health, Dave Sharpe also hopes to raise money for children's hospice Ty Hafan.

Mr Sharpe, who lives in Hywel Crescent with his wife Jenny, said he got on the scales just after Christmas - and couldn't believe it when the dial passed the 21 stones mark!

He said: "I thought'you're joking!' But they weren't.

"I then knew I had to do something about it, so I checked with my doctor, and set about shedding the pounds.

"I donate money to Ty Hafan every month via my wages, and it is such a worthwhile cause, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and raise even more money for the charity as I lose weight!"

Mr Sharpe, who monitors CCTV at Tesco on Port Road, has been sticking to his regime for the past week, and his seven-pound weight loss has already generated 170 for the charity.

Mr Sharpe said that one incentive to shed the pounds was his father's premature death at the age of 52.

He said his father, who lived in Canada, had been a large man, and his size had become detrimental to his health in the end.

"He didn't get to see his great grandchildren, and I want to see mine," he said.

"This is about longevity too."

Mr Sharpe said his plan of action includes taking regular exercise, snacking on healthy food, and staying away from the booze.
