Thieves wreck birthday

A YOUNG lad's birthday was ruined after thieves stole thousands of pounds from his mum and dad's shop.

The men distracted shop owners Anwar and Nasrin Shahjahan of M and S Stores in Vere Street last Friday, before making off with the week's takings worth around 5,000.

Friday was son Tanvir's ninth birthday, but he received neither a present nor a cake.

Mrs Shahjahan, who also has an eight-month-old baby, said: "It was such a sad day for my son.

"We were going to take the money to the bank in town, then get him a present."

This is not the first time the Shahjajan's shop has been targeted by criminals.

Three years ago, Mrs Shahjahan was threatened at knifepoint by a man who entered the store demanding money.

He was later arrested and jailed for 18 months.

"I was happy when the man went to prison, but I just want it to stop now," she said.
