BARRY 15
TREHERBERT 25
LAST Saturday"s visitors Treherbert, besides heading the division and having lost only two league matches, were obviously seeking rev-enge for the defeat which Barry inflicted on them earlier in the season.
With Barry"s injury list still affecting the composition of the team the selectors were, however, able to assemble a squad to meet the Rhondda side in what would be a very difficult encounter.
On a perfect day for playing rugby, Barry gathered Treherbert"s kick-off and launched an all-out attack which, following some outstanding play by all, brought an early reward of a try by hooker Brad Gee, converted by centre Chris Cummings.
Treherbert, obviously stung by this reverse, used the kicking skills of their half backs and the drive of the forwards to gain position in the Barry 22 where, after ten minutes" play, from a driving maul they scored an unconverted try.
As the game moved into the second quarter and after Barry had lost a ruck close to their line, Treherbert went further ahead with a converted try.
This was soon followed by a penalty goal for a 15-7 lead to the visitors, and this increased when a Barry attack broke down and the ball was moved quickly out to the right wing, who had a clear run to the line for another converted try.
Barry immediately hit back with a series of attacks that, just before the half-time whistle resulted in a penalty and three points.
Although now facing a 12-point deficit, their first-half display had certainly boosted the Barry players" confidence and from the restart they were able to gain a foothold in the visitors" 22, from where they launched a series of attacks.
The Treherbert defence held out until, following a lineout, No 8 Jason Evans was driven over the line for an unconverted try.
With the game entering the final 20 minutes, the Barry XV did its utmost to add to their score, but were unable to gain the upper hand against a very well-drilled and experienced Rhondda side finally finding themselves chasing the game.
Treherbert made the result safe with a penalty goal for a 25-15 victory.
This Saturday, Barry travel for another difficult fixture against a top three side, in Gilfach Goch, who will also be seeking revenge for an early season defeat at Barry. The coach leaves the clubhouse at 12.30pm.
