Under-12s 5
BARRY RFC Under-12s entertained Llanishen at the Reservoir Field on a day that was the coldest of the season, but Barry soon turned up the heat for the visitors when Tomos Perry opened the scoring, catching a neat pass and sprinting in for an individual try.
Minutes later he sped through the line to intercept a pass and ran in his second without a hand being laid on him.
It wasn't long before Tomos was back on the scoresheet, following superb back row play from Charlotte Waller, Luke Giddings and Jake Connelly, which left opposition defence all over the field.
Tomos received a neat pass from Jack Fitchet at the back of a ruck and ran in his hat-trick.
The big outside half was in the thick of it again, and before being taken out by a big hit, he off-loaded the ball to Rhidian Mepham, who rounded his opposite number and ran in a 40-yard try.
The Lions went in at half time 20 points up as no conversions were made.
The second half saw more good play from the Barry pack, with good interchanging handling movements.
The Scott brothers, Tiernon and Einon, did well in the back line, putting in plenty of big tackles. From a turned-over ball, Tiernon broke through the centre, feigned left then straightened up and ran in for a converted try.
From another piece of slack opposition play, Andre Williamson intercepted a loose pass 20 metres out; his strength carried him through the tackles and he ran crashing over for a converted try.
Llanishen did have some fine phases of play and took their chances.
Their rucking had more structure to it than the Barry style and when a Barry flanker was sold a dummy pass, their outside half cruised through the gap to put them on the score sheet.
However, another unfortunate pass in their back line saw the ball being intercepted eagerly by Einon Scott, who easily ran in for a converted try.
The Barry backs were too strong for their opposition, Tomos Perry proved too much of a handful and went on the score sheet for the fourth time.
To their credit, Llanishen did not buckle - they stuck to the task and must have been dreadfully disappointed when, following a textbook ruck and rolling maul, they spanned the ball wide only for it to be intercepted by Tomos Perry yet again.
The sighs and moans from the large Llanishen following could be heard in the clubhouse.
Had four interception tries not been conceded, the travellers could have perhaps put on a better display.
Final score: 55-5 to Barry.
Barry will next play Rhiwbina at home, players to meet at the clubhouse at 10.15am.
