DOW Corning has planted two trees in the first round of planting in a project that aims to create 40 acres of new woodland at Porthkerry, helped by a cash injection of 10,000 earlier this year from the Barry site.
The Porthkerry Community Woodland project, which is co-ordinated by the Woodland Trust, received the grant as part of Dow Corning's Corporate Giving Fund, allocated for larger-scale community projects close to Dow Corning sites in Europe.
The project was selected for a grant because of its environmental impact and involvement of the local community in the design and use of the new open space.
Over the next three years, thousands more trees will be planted by the local community at Porthkerry.
The project is part of the Woodland Trust's new'Tree for All' campaign
The campaign aims to plant 12 million trees, one for each child in the UK, with the involvement of at least one million children in the planting.
Margaret Matthews, managing director of Dow Corning Ltd, said: "It's very exciting to think that we have just put down the first roots of a project that future generations of the area will enjoy."
