Charity desperate for foster homes

A CAT protection society is looking to people in the Vale of Glamorgan to provide new homes for abandoned cats struggling to survive the winter chill.

Kate Cubbage, the homing officer at Cardiff Cats Protection, said: "At this time of year the weather makes the plight of abandoned animals all the more difficult.

"And what's more, the end of the holiday season often acts as a catalyst for the abandonment of unwanted animals.

"Our branch does not have the benefit of an animal shelter and as such all animals are housed with fosterers.

"All of our places are full at the moment and we have lists of kittens and cats that are living on the street or in homes where they are not cared for because there is no space to bring them in.

"We are in desperate need of new fosterers as well as homes for the cats and kittens we have in care.

"Once these animals are rehomed we will have the opportunity to bring in more animals deserving of a new chance in life."

Penarth AM Lorraine Barrett AM, chair of the all-party working group on animal welfare at the Welsh Assembly, recently voiced her support for the charity and has helped lead a volunteer drive.

Kate added: "All of the cats and kittens we care for have not had the best start in life and as such we need to find special, understanding homes for them.

"Cats make wonderful companions.

"But adopting a cat is a serious decision which should not be taken lightly.

"Before adopting a cat or kitten ask yourself: Will I have enough time for the cat? Can I provide it with enough space and even outdoor facilities? Who looks after it when I am on a holiday?
