THE wide range of lifelong learning, sporting, health and recreational facilities to be provided at a landmark community project in Barry have been welcomed by Vale of Glamorgan Mayor, Cllr Margaret Alexander.
The near 3 million Hub project at the Barry YMCA, which is due to open this month, will be a multi-purpose community enterprise including a dedicated day unit for adults with disabilities, child care areas, IT suites, after school clubs, youth areas, voluntary sector office base units, community education rooms, gymnasium, meeting rooms and cafe room.
The Hub, which has been financially backed by the Vale Council, Welsh Assembly Government, the National Lottery's Community Fund and European Regional Development Fund, is a voluntary sector project from which 40 community groups will benefit.
Approximately 11 new jobs will be created and 70 safeguarded.
Around 1,500 people currently use the existing YMCA building weekly, with many more on the waiting list.
Another recent visitor was Eluned Morgan, a Member of the European Parliament, who was impressed with the level of proposed facilities, and praised project manager Anthea Clements and her team for all the hard work put into making the project a success.
