A new role for Damian

BARRY-BORN Damian Green MP has been asked by new Tory leader David Cameron to accept the office of Shadow Minister for Immigration.

Mr Green, who served as Shadow Education Minister under Ian Duncan Smith, supported David Davis in the recent leadership battle.

The son of Howard Green, who started his journalistic career on the Barry and District News during Second World War, Damian was a pupil at St Helen s School, Barry, prior to moving to Reading, Berkshire with the family in 1965.

He took his degree at Balliol College, Oxford.

There is a suggestion that politics is in the family bloodline.

Thanks to the Barry and District News, which published a letter seeking information about possible relatives still living in Barry, Howard Green was put in touch with Mrs Dorothy Rees, his second cousin once removed.

Mrs Rees, of George Street, Barry, was the first woman mayor of Barry Town Council in 1987. Her husband Lionel also served as mayor a few years later.

There is, however, a crucial difference - Mr and Mrs Rees fly the Labour flag while Damian, who is MP for Ashford, Kent, has been a Conservative since his student days.
