TESCO has confirmed it is in discussion with Brynhill Golf Club over plans to relocate and enlarge its Barry store.
The firm wants to build a bigger store on part of the club s existing grounds - a move they say will create 200 new jobs. Rumours of such a move have been circulating in the town for months, and Vale MP John Smith has publicly opposed such a plan, saying it would damage other retail businesses and compound congestion problems on Port Road.
A spokesman for Tesco said: We are aware of the rumours that have been circulating and concerns raised. Due to commercial sensitivities we have been unable to confirm our plans nor give details until now.
We are delighted to be able to assist the golf club and ensure its future as well as respond to our customers repeated requests.
Members of Brynhill Golf Club will vote on the plans at a meeting on Thursday, January 19. If they approve the scheme, a public exhibition will be held at the club on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24, followed by an ongoing in-store exhibition in Tesco. A planning application will be submitted following these consultations.
The Tesco spokesman added that any club land lost to Tesco would be replaced to north-west of the golfclub.
