Emergency landing

A TRANSATLANTIC passenger jet made an emergency landing at Cardiff International Airport yesterday.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene and the Barry Dock Lifeboat was launched on standby into the Bristol Channel.

The British Airways 747, flying from New York's JFK airport to Heathrow, London, diverted to Rhoose at around 12.30pm when smoke appeared in the aircraft's cockpit.

There were 17 crew members aboard the plane but just two passengers.

An airport spokesman said fire crews were on standby but the plane landed safely. The cause of the problem in the cockpit is still being investigated.

Peter Phillips, marketing manager at the airport, said fire crews could not find any trace of smoke on the aircraft shortly after the plane landed.

The crew and both passengers remained on the aircraft while the initial inquiry was carried out.
