Andrew completes championship hat-trick

BARRY'S golden boy Andrew Selby has taken the British Amateur Boxing title at 50kg.

Representing Splott ABC and Wales, Andrew boxed at the Festival Hall, Nottingham, on December 12, bidding for his third British title in 14 months.

Andrew had to overcome a number of opponents to reach the final where he was matched against Manchester's Lee Wood.

The first round began with Wood forcing the pace and Andrew counter-punching to good effect, taking it by 6-5.

The pair stood toe to toe in the second with the packed crowd roaring them on.

Wood connected with a left-right combination and Andrew replied with a thunderous left hook which sent Wood to the canvas, beating the count with seconds to go.

In the final round Andrew forced the pace, cutting off the ring and throwing punches to head and body to take the title against a very durable opponent.

The crowd gave him a standing ovation, and many pundits say he is one of the finest talents they have seen.

Andrew, who is 17 on Christmas Day, now has his sights set on conquering Europe.

He is trained by the highly successful Pat Mahony in Splott, where everyone is proud of his achievements and wish him the best for the future.

Andrew would like to thank Pat and his wife, plus Tony Collins, his father and Clayton, and the boys at the gym for all their support.
