Linnets knuckle down after penalty

SP CONSTRUCTION 1

BARRY FC 3

THE Linnets' impressive away form continued apace in the Vale of Glamorgan Premier Division last Saturday at Pencoedtre, when another spirited performance put paid to SP Construction.

Despite conceding, quite rightly, a penalty late on in the first half - which Construction duly slotted past Damien Lack in the Barry goal - the green and whites knuckled down and pulled back an excellent goal just before half-time.

With some wonderful interplay on the edge of the penalty box, the ball fell to James Dawson, who expertly angled the shot around the keeper to level the game at 1-1, with his second goal of the season.

The second half proved to be equally entertaining, with both teams displaying some good moments of flowing football. It was a keenly fought contest, but in stark contrast to the good display put on in the defeat to Grove Park recently, Barry were able to capitalise on the possession they had and found the back of the net on two more occasions to kill the game off.

Both goals were put away by Nathan Shaw, the first being an excellent long-range effort that would have been good enough to have graced any football match.

There was still enough time for Ben Taylor to have one disallowed, and for his dad Paul to miss a sitter, but everybody associated with the young club were more than happy with the 3-1 victory.

Barry now travel to Bryn-y-Don this Saturday to take on the troubled Dinas Powys team, but the Linnets must approach this game as they would any team higher up the table and with equal commitment.

It's possible that football could return to Jenner Park on Boxing Day this year in the form of a friendly between Barry FC and fellow ground-sharers, and South Wales Senior side, Cadoxton Cons.

Boxing Day football was always popular in days of old at Jenner Park, and it's hoped that clearance from the Vale Council can be given for this much anticipated clash to go ahead.
