GLYN COCH 21 Sully Sports 7
HAVING only played one fixture over the last month, due to the Autumn International series, Sully Sports were keen to get some match practice in before the Mallet Cup Tie with Cardiff Saracens.
The intended home fixture was cancelled late on Friday by Llanstrisant, but fixture secretary John Stafford was able to secure an away game at Glyn Coch.
On a very wet, muddy pitch neither side was able to play their usual brand of open rugby, and the Sports used the game to run through, and sharpen up on, their set moves.
Despite this and having the edge up front, the Sports found themselves 14 - 0 down in the second period and chasing the game.
From an old fashion ruck/ maul attack deep in the home 22, No 8 Graham Burke broke to score a try, converted by outside half Mike Mees, and the balance had swung to the visitors.
Pushing for a result, the Sports tried to raise the tempo, but a quick throw-in in their own half went terribly wrong and the ball was intercepted and run back for the decisive score.
Still the Sports were glad to get a run out against a hard working and polished outfit, which hopefully will have helped get the rustiness out of the play and stand them in good stead for the cup tie.
Sports entertain Cardiff Saracens at the Sully Sports ground, on Saturday, December 10, ko 2pm, in the second round of the Cardiff and District Mallet Cup.
Congratulations to Sully Sports winger John Thomas on his recent selection for the Cardiff and District side which beat Mid Glamorgan District in the Howells Cup, at Rumney RFC.
Prop Toby Warren was also selected, but because of family reasons it was not possible for him to play.
It is probable that this victory will put the CDRU in the quarter finals which will give John the chance to qualify for his CDRU tie, and Toby to make up for the disappointment of missing out.
