Residents back safety petition

CONCERNED residents are backing a petition calling for improved pedestrian safety at the junction of Gladstone Road and Holton Road.

One of the petition organisers, local councillor Barry Shaw, said he was delighted with the level of support.

"Residents are calling on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to acknowledge the traffic dangers along Gladstone Road - especially adjacent to the Conservative Club," he said.

"In view of the risk to life and limb, we call for the construction of improved pedestrian crossing facilities at this location.

"So far we have more than 150 names in support of this campaign and I hope to present the petition to this week's Vale Council meeting.

"We will have an opportunity to explain to the council cabinet how important this issue has become."

He stressed that the alarming level of accidents in parts of Barry was exposed in a recent report (Barry and District News, December 1).

"This is a well-used crossing location to get to the Vere Street shops and there are a number of busy road converging at this area," he added.

Fellow councillor Keith Stockdale said that it was essential to provide more protection for pedestrians.
