Skipping for Ethan

FOUR fit family members got hot and sweaty to raise more than £170 to raise money for a disabled toddler.

Julie Mees, and her children Joseph, aged 12, Cerys, aged eight, and Ellie, aged six, skipped for a total of 15 minutes in their Bramble Avenue garden to generate cash towards two-and-a-half-year-old Ethan Herbert"s wheelchair fund.

Ethan"s mum Vicky appealed to readers of the Barry and District News in October to help her buy a mini-wheelchair for her son. Ethan, who lives with his mum and two brothers in George Street.

He suffers from cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus.

Julie said: "When I read Ethan"s story in the paper, it touched me straight away. I showed the kids and they said they wanted to do something to help.

"We thought about ways in which we could help him, including a sponsored walk or draw. But we decided on skipping because there is so much emphasis on exercise at the moment. As well as raising money for such a good cause, we"re raising awareness about the importance of healthy living and keeping fit."

Cerys, a pupil at High Street Primary School, said: "We"re learning about the Samaritans and helping other people at school at the moment. My friends think what we"re doing is really good."
