Care is rewarded

A Vale of Glamorgan couple have won a prestigious award for their long-term care of a young woman with learning disabilities.

Janet and Malcolm Langdon of Barry were presented with an Outstanding Service Award from the Care Forum Wales after being nominated by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The couple, who received their award from Welsh Health Minister Dr Brian Gibbons, are supported by the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Adult Placement Service.

Project Manager Marijke Jenkins nominated them for the award in recognition of their long-standing commitment to the service user.

Marijke said: "The service user, who has complex needs, has lived with the Langdons as a member of their family since 1982 when she was just six years old.

"Initially, this was a fostering arrangement, but when she turned 18, the Langdons continued to care for her by training as adult placement carers.

"In this capacity they have ensured that she has grown in independence and is a valuable member of the community.

"The lady, now in her twenties, is expected to move onto living semi-independently in the near future but I know the Langdons will continue to be committed to her, and fully deserve this award for all their work which has enhanced the service user's quality of life"

The Care Forum Wales Award acknowledged not only the Langdons' work with this particular service user but also their activities campaigning for the rights of learning disabled adults, which have continued despite Mrs Langdon's recent health problems.

Anyone who is interested in supporting vulnerable adults who are unable to live independently is encouraged to contact the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Adult Placement Service.
