Food that is fit for a queen

A GROUP of students from Barry enjoyed a right royal experience this summer - when they prepared the tastiest treats for the Queen's own guests at Buckingham Palace.

Hospitality and Catering students from Barry College enjoyed a'once in a lifetime' work experience placement catering for thousands at the prestigious Buckingham Palace Garden Parties.

Two lucky students also gained royal approval, receiving awards for their hard work.

The Garden Parties, which cater for between 4,000 and 6,000 guests each time, have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s.

People from all sections of the community are invited, and The Queen insisted the Garden Parties should go ahead this year, despite the atrocities of July 7.

The students were monitored while they worked, and Harry Thorne and Christopher Legg were given awards for Employee of the Event from catering company Sodexho Prestige Events, which has linked with Barry College in recent years.

Director Sue Creed: "It is always a pleasure to work with the students at Barry College and I hope I have the opportunity to do so again in the near future."

Part of the link has seen students gain work experience in prestigious events including the British Grand Prix, Royal Ascot and at Buckingham Palace.

The two students were working in the Diplomats Marquee and have received certificates and vouchers for their favourite shops.

Harry Thorne is now on a trainee management course with Concord Hotels and Christopher Legg is completing the second year of his Catering course at Barry College.

Kevin Fairlie, Course Tutor, said: "Well done to all of the students for representing the College in the best way, and congratulations to Harry and Chris on their awards.
