Barry's excellent timing brings impressive victory

REWARD for the cup victory against Bethesda saw Barry come out of the draw during the week against First Division opponents Narbeth in a testing away challenge on December 3.

On this weekend's performance, if all players are on form and play to their potential, the West Walians could possibly be in for a surprise.

A good start to the game will also be imperative as was the case in this league encounter, when after two minutes winger Dave Provis was put away on a 30-metre run through defenders from an excellently timed and executed pass by centre Andrew Buckland.

The only score conceded by Barry came a few minutes later from a penalty kick. Centre Chris Cummings replied soon after, and followed up with two more first half penalties to make the half-time score 14-3.

The Barry forwards continued to dominate and this allowed captain and outside-half Andy Griffiths to utilise the wind and slope advantage with some deft kicks for position.

Youth gave way to experience as No 8 Hywel Jones and second row John Campbell, after excellent performances, were replaced by veterans Jason Evans and Martin Tanner.

The final movements between centres Buckland and Cummings was pure class, and supporting flanker Owain Brown reaped the final benefit to cross behind the posts for Cummings to convert.

Final replacements Lewis Williams and James Hollister came on with 20 minutes left, and Hollister showed deceptive pace for a prop with a 30 metre touchline run.

As injury time approached Cummings finished off another fine move that he himself started with a charging midfield run to link up again with his fellow backs and take the eventual scoring pass.

To cap it all, and much to the delight of a large home crowd, second row Matt Campbell caught the ball straight from the restart and headed for the try-line.

Cummings converted as the referee brought the entertainment to an end.

Because of the autumn internationals, the only first team game between now and the Narbeth cup match will be on November 12 away at Tylorstown.

Training attendance for players during the weeks ahead will be imperative as fitness will no doubt be a key requirement for that match, especially if Barry are to give a true account of their capabilities against top opposition.
