Watch out, London!

THE Olympics came to Gibbonsdown this half term week - and who knows, this may have been the chance to see a future star of London 2012 and beyond!

An event organised by Gibbonsdown residents board and Communities First team from Vale of Glamorgan police, gave children the opportunity to take part in sports events and activities.

Holm View leisure centre was the venue on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, where Olympic-style events were held.

Events included karate, dance, football, badminton, hockey, athletics, lacrosse, gymnastics and'Bocha' bowling.

The Wednesday saw a special visit from the Vale of Glamorgan Environmental Health Noise Pollution team, who were giving advice on noise during Fireworks Night celebration, with a little help from Scoop the dog.

PC Johnny Johnson, who has recently completed seven marathons in seven days on behalf of children's charity Barnados, and is soon to leave for New York in another run, was on hand to present medals for the highest scores and also the champions' trophy for the highest overall score, awarded to Lamara Watkins.

As Gibbonsdown Community First Team Officer Kate Lerwill explained: "Activities like this are an excellent way of reaching the community.

"It gives them something to be a part of during the half term week, and to build on communications between themselves and the police.

"The feedback we have had has been positive, and it is particularly encouraging to be able to see the response from the children towards this event.

"Community First will continue to work with partner agencies and community organisations to hold these kinds of events.

"Without the help and input of Gibbonsdown Resident's Board, this particular event could not have gone ahead and been the huge success it has proved to be."
