Chris goes a fair way to win furthest drive

LOCAL youngster Chris Jones, from Wenvoe Castle Golf Club, Vale of Glamorgan, was celebrating this week after winning the furthest drive competition at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Junior Golf Championship 2005.

Chris, aged 17, was delighted to win the title at the prestigious event held at The Belfry to raise funds for the BHF's life-saving work.

The team also included Nicholas James, aged 17, and Dominic Ham, aged 18.

The youngsters putted through both local and regional rounds of the competition to win their place in the National Final.

They performed well on the day, coming in 15th place with 65 points in the Stableford Point event. Chris was presented with a glass paperweight and a signed photograph of Colin Mont-gomerie by Tony Doveston, regional director at the BHF, to mark his achievement.

David Napier, BHF director for Wales said: "Congratulations to Chris on his success and to all the teams who took part in this year's championship for raising such a fantastic sum to help the BHF's life-saving work."

The championship is the only team contest played nationally that is open to both boys and girls of all levels of play.

Young golfers are given the opportunity to compete at a national level while raising essential funds for the BHF.

This year, the competition has broken all previous fundraising records: almost 280,000 has been raised by the 4,833 participants nationwide.

Professional golfer and competition supporter Colin Mont-gomerie describes the competition as "a must for all junior golfers".
