The making of Mr Wales!

BARRY'S very own Mr Wales puts his success firmly down to a local gym which is a registered charity, run on a voluntary basis.

Simon Horsell, of Crossways Street, won the title at the Welsh Federation of Body Builders Mr Wales Championship 2005 earlier this month.

And not only did Simon walk away with the title in the under 80kg category, he also took the overall title out of the four different weight categories.

Simon said: "This is the first time that I have won the overall title, but definitely not the last!

"It was a fantastic to win, and I'm now looking forward to the British Championships in October, as well as the NABBA Mr Universe 2005 in October."

Simon extends his thanks to everyone who has supported him, including his family, everyone at the Barry Gymnasium Ltd, staff at the Tadross Hotel and Lee from Unique Flooring.

He has only been bodybuilding for two years, but his strict regime of two training sessions a day has ensured his success at competitions.

And as a regular at Barry Gymnasium Ltd, he is grateful for the support the gym has given him.

Barry Gymnasium Ltd is a far cry from your average swanky and exclusive health club and spa - but its commitment to fitness was highlighted by Simon's Mr Wales win.

The fitness centre, which is owned by Guy Sillett, is a registered charity and is run completely on a voluntary basis by qualified instructors. This is to ensure members pay as little as possible to use the facilities.

According to Guy, a bodybuilder himself: "Every penny that goes into that till goes back into the gym itself.

"Our members are important to us. When they come to use the gym, someone is always on hand to assist them. We don't just let them get on with it. We are a close community, and also have a good social life."

Barry Gymnasium Ltd caters for all ages, abilities and sexes. There are reduced fees for people with special needs, pensioners, and anyone who represents or has represented Wales or Barry at senior level.
