Baby torture mum told to expect jail

A VALE mother who tortured her baby girl leaving her permanently disfigured will be sentenced next week.

And last week a Judge warned the woman that she is going to jail for a long time.

Judge Stephen Hopkins said: "What that little girl went through makes me shudder.

"This woman has disfigured her child for life.

"She maintains she is in no way responsible for the baby's suffering, blaming everyone else but herself.

"For one year she caused grievous bodily harm to a small child, resulting in permanent disfigurement."

Judge Hopkins warned the woman - who cannot be named to protect the identity of her toddler - to expect a lengthy sentence when she returns to court.

A trial at Cardiff Crown Court in August heard the 16-month-old girl was regularly treated for skin infections across her body.

The skin infections were made worse by her mother picking them "to the bone".

Each time she left hospital her wounds deteriorated and she was readmitted with "appalling" injuries.

Large sections of the girl's skin and limbs were covered in suppurating sores through which her bones could be seen.

She was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London where staff alerted police to the mother's disturbing behaviour towards her baby.

A nurse told police she had seen the woman "picking away at the baby's wounds" in a way that left hospital staff "horrified".

The woman was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and child neglect.

She will be sentenced on Friday, October 7, after psychiatric reports are carried out.
