E-coli case confirmed in Vale

A CASE of the E-coli 0157 bug has been confirmed in a 12-year-old child in the Vale.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has written to all parents at Stanwell School, Penarth, where the youngster is a pupil, although the authority is stressing it has "no reason to believe the infection was contracted directly from the school."

The number of cases in South Wales has now reached 122, though health officials say they believe the outbreak has reached its peak.

It is believed that the source of the bacterium was a Bridgend supplier of cooked meats.

The council has told parents: "E-coli 0157 can be picked up from a number of places, and environ-mental health officers from the Vale are working with the parents of the infected child, the Outbreak Control Team and doctors, to identify the source of the infection.
