BATHING water quality around the Barry coast is set to benefit from a new phase of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's 53 million investment in the area's sewerage network.
Work has started this week on a 1.8 million project in Batts field, which is located at the end of Daniel Street.
This section of the project will take 32 weeks to complete and involves improvement work to the sewerage network.
The work, which is designed to reduce the number of times storm water runs into local watercourses, is currently taking place on weekdays from 8am to 6pm.
Andrew Bowen, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's regional investment manager, said: "This essential scheme will bring environmental benefits to the area's bathing water. I'd like to thank the local community for their patience throughout the planning stages and hope they will continue to bear with us throughout the duration of the scheme. Disruption will be kept to a minimum."
A 5million investment programme is already underway in Barry Town Centre, upgrading the local sewer system, and is due for completion in November this year.
The work is being carried out by AMEC Group Ltd, delivering the project on behalf of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. The company is investing 1.2 billion in its water and wastewater network between 2005 and 2010.
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water is now owned by Glas Cymru and exists to give customers the best possible service while keeping bills low. Profits are reinvested in the business to deliver further benefits. The company is investing 1.2 billion in its network between 2000 and 2005.
