Money manager jailed for fiddle

A MARKS & Spencer manager from Rhoose was jailed yesterday (Wednesday) for fiddling his own store"s charge card, to pay for a luxury spending spree in rival shops.

Money manager Tam Mosey, 36, of Norseman Close, used his expertise in the store"s charge card department to swindle £12,500 from the high street giant.

Mosey went on his shopping spree buying jewellery, designer clothes, restaurant meals and furniture from companies such as IKEA and Habitat.

But a court heard Mosey then faked refunds from discarded price tags in his own store to pay the balance on the M&S charge card.

Prosecutor Claire Wilks said: "He was stealing at least £200 on a weekly basis, and effectively laundered the money through his M&S charge card.

"He would take discarded price tags and process them for refunds before disposing of them."

Cardiff Crown Court heard Mosey used his M&S card - a credit card which can also be used anywhere - to spend "considerable sums".

Mosey was employed as money manager at the company's main Cardiff Queen Street store when he was caught.

He was sacked, and has since been working as a train conductor.

The twice divorced father-of-one later claimed he stole from Marks & Spencer to cover child support and mortgage payments.

Mike Hammett, defending, said: "He was robbing Peter to pay Paul.

"He had two failed marriages and wanted to provide his new partner and her daughter with a good standard of living.

"He knew what he was doing was wrong."

Mosey admitted stealing £12,500 from Marks & Spencer over 18 months. He was jailed for 12 months.

Judge David Wyn Morgan said: "While you may have been under pressure, you did spend much of this money on luxuries.

"A great many people live under similar financial pressure, yet they do not resort to crime to relieve it.

"You committed a serious criminal offence, and you must take responsibility for it."
