Mum wants answers on health risk

A BARRY mother claims the Vale of Glamorgan Council has not given her any details about asbestos found five months ago in the living room ceiling of her council house.

Amanda Baird, of Ogmore Place, says she has regularly phoned the council for information about the asbestos - but has yet to receive any response.

And she says her main concern is for her six-year-old daughter Chloe, who suffers from asthma.

Amanda said: "My doctor has told me to find out what type of asbestos it is, as certain types may aggravate my daughter's condition - but the council won't tell me anything.

"I phone up all the time and leave messages, but no-one gets back to me.

"I just want someone to reassure me and then I'll be fine. It would only take a phone call," she added.

Amanda's father Sam Baird said: "All we want to know is what type of asbestos it is and what precautions we need to take," he said.

"If it was the civic offices or another public place, and our hard-working public servants were at risk, I expect the wheels would have moved at a much greater pace."

The council's operational manager for building services, John Gleeson, said: "The council is currently investigating the delay between asbestos tests being carried out at Ms Baird's house and the beginning of work to replace the ceiling.
