Linnets lose out in first match

BARRY FC finally put all the talking behind them last Saturday when The Linnets took part in their first competitive fixture.

Invited into the FAW Trophy by the South Wales FA, Barry FC were resplendent in their all-new green kit provided by shirt sponsor Compliant Personnel Limited.

This inaugural fixture, though, was always going to be a difficult one as the draw placed Barry with previous Trophy winners, Ragged School FC of Swansea.

Cheered on by a coach load of supporters, Barry FC actually took a shock lead in the 17th minute when Ashley Griffiths made history in becoming the first player to score a goal for the fledgling Linnets.

Ash wasn"t exactly known for his goal-scoring prowess for the Town, being a defender, so when Barry were awarded a penalty kick the script was written for player-manager Griffiths to slot the ball away.

It was a historic moment that sent the travelling support into raptures.

Life is tough though and the lead lasted just three minutes when Ragged School broke away and equalised.

Despite Ragged School having better chances in front of goal, even hitting the post at one point, in terms of possession Barry FC were holding their own.

Barry finally fell behind on the hour mark, and when "keeper Damien Lack was lobbed in the 70th minute for 3-1 the writing was on the wall for Barry"s brief cup competition flirtation.

Another goal was added in the 87th minute and, more cruelly perhaps, a further two goals followed deep into injury time.

Despite the team missing four first-team regulars through other commitments, it was ultimately a disappointing scoreline.

Rome wasn"t built in a day, however, and everyone associated with the club knew that this tie was potentially the toughest the Linnets will face all season.

It"s a start though, and hopefully the future will be bright for Barry FC.

With a loyal fan-base, sponsors, and having the privilege of playing at Jenner Park this season, it"s certainly a boost for such a new club, and despite the result on Saturday, the mood is buoyant.
