Kicking up a stink over drain problem

A FOUL stench emanating from drains is making life unbearable for members of a Barry social club and nearby residents.

Retired Colin Bailey, a committee member at the British Railway on Broad Street, is among many people fed up with the rancid smelling water that makes its way from a blocked drain to the back of the club every day.

The liquid is a combination of fat, food and anything else that makes it way down the sinks of the properties next door to the club.

Mr Bailey said: "I'm absolutely fed up with it. I came out here the other day and nearly brought my breakfast up.

"The smell gets so bad sometimes we have to shut all the windows - even in the summer - and there is no way we can let kids play out on the patio."

Mr Bailey said he had contacted landowners Gareth Jones Estate Agents, asking them to rectify the blocked drains on several occasions.

A company employee did unblock the drains on Friday, according to Mr Bailey, but by Monday lunchtime the drain had filled back up and the stench was as bad as ever.

Jean Gomez, aged 60, who lives in a flat next to the club, can smell the drain from her home.

"It's absolutely disgusting," she said.

"I have lived here for ten years, and never had any problems. It's very hard to live with this."
