Dip into a pool of knowledge

PEOPLE fond of a dip al fresco were bitterly disappointed when Barry's Knap Bathing Pool was filled up with concrete.

But thanks to the efforts of author Janet Smith, the memory of what was once the pulse of Barry - as well as many similar establishments across the country - lives on.

Liquid Assets documents the rise and the fall of lidos and open air pools in Britain. Beginning in Bath in the early 19th century, Smith traces the development of a new breed of purpose-built, open-air pool, designed to entice swimmers from rivers and lakes.

And by the 1930s, no self-respecting town or city dared be without one, with aqua arenas dotted across the country matching the best in Europe.

Liquid Assets is unique as it is a complete document of lidos and open air swimming pools.

Packed with stunning images, case studies and a comprehensive list of all known 20th century bathing arenas, it is a book that every swimmer and architectural enthusiast will want to dip into, time and time again.

Liquid Assets is available from August 22 and retails at £14.99. For more details visit www.playedinbritain.co.uk
