Cliff's ready for war on waste

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council has appointed a new Operational Manager to head up its Waste Management and Cleansing Department.

Clifford Parish joined the council on August 1, bringing with him more than 30 years of experience within the waste and cleansing sector.

He will help the council plan waste services, to ensure the Vale meets and exceeds targets set by the Welsh Assembly for recycling, composting, waste minimisation and landfill diversion.

Clifford previously worked for the City and County of Swansea, where he was responsible for all aspects of their municipal waste management service.

He also advised the Welsh Local Govern-ment Association on waste issues. He said: "Last year we collected 68,800 tonnes of household rubbish in the Vale, and nearly 75 percent of this ended up buried in the ground.

"We need to recycle and compost at least 40 percent by 2010 to meet Welsh Assembly targets, so we have no choice but to change the way we deal with rubbish.

"The most challenging part of my new role will be bringing about these changes, which can only succeed with the support of all residents and businesses in the Vale."
