A VALE of Glamorgan Education Authority initiative aimed at youngsters who enjoy writing and are beginning to show talent has been celebrating a successful first year.
The Vale Writers' Squad comprises 32 Year 5 or 6 pupils from 16 local primary schools who meet once a term with an established author to share their experiences of writing and to take part in associated activities.
The Vale squad has worked with poet Francesca Kaye, retired headteacher Glyn Scott, who has a particular interest in children's writing, and Neil Nuttall, a writer and poet from Powys.
A group of pupils also attended the Hay on Wye Literature Festival in May where they met well-known children's author Jacqueline Wilson.
Held at Barry's Mount Sorrel Hotel, who sponsored the event by providing the venue and refreshments, a "Poems and Pop" session allowed the children the chance to share some of their work with parents, friends and school staff.
