Six years in jail for service station heist

A VALE man was last week sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court to six years in prison following an armed robbery in May.

Anthony May, aged 19, of Boverton, was sentenced to six years' imprisonment for the armed robbery that took place at Four Cross Service Station on Tuesday, May 17.

May was also sentenced to three years' imprisonment for supplying class A drugs, to run concurrently.

The armed robbery was committed using an imitation firearm that was recovered soon after the incident took place.

The crucial piece of evidence that led to the conviction was a black jacket found close to the scene. In CCTV footage of the robbery the culprit could be clearly seen wearing a black jacket.

The morning after the robbery, officers went back to the scene to walk the route they believed the robber had taken on his escape, as the imitation firearm used and a pair of gloves had been found close by.

On walking this route the officers found a black jacket which they realised was the same one worn by the robber seen on CCTV footage.

On examining the jacket the officers found the name and address of Anthony May in the pockets. By linking this with the CCTV footage and descriptions of the armed robber, May was arrested at his home by an armed officers in the early hours of Wednesday, May 18.

DI Dave Runnalls said: "This sentence demonstrates that the perpetrators of these crimes, though extremely rare in the Vale of Glamorgan, will be investigated and bought to justice."
