A&E unit "is to stay open"

THE Barry & District News can exclusively reveal that the accident and emergency minor injuries unit at Barry Hospital will NOT close - despite recent reports to the contrary.

The decision not to close the unit was made at a meeting of the Local Health Board on Tuesday.

Gordon Harrop, chief officer of the Community Health Council for the Vale of Glamorgan, said: "It will not happen. The service will continue to be funded."

Mr Harrop also stated that it was very unlikely that there would be any NHS cutbacks in Barry Hospital or Llandough Hospital.

Local resident Jackie Woolford was delighted with the news.

She said: "I think it"s really good news, especially for those with young children and the elderly.

"People don"t want to have to traipse down to the Heath in Cardiff. It would have been ridiculous - especially for an area this size."

*The minor injuries unit at Barry Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 9am-4pm.
