Fete is such fun in the sun

THE League of Friends of Barry Hospital held their annual fete on Saturday and enjoyed wonderful weather for the event.

Gay Fifield, secretary of the League of Friends, said: "At one point at the opening of the event by Jane Hutt AM, there was no grass to be seen - just crowds of wonderful loyal supporters.

"We sold out of programmes, which means more than 700 people came through the gate."

The event was attended by John Smith MP, Jane Hutt AM - who opened the fete - the Deputy Mayor of Barry Cllr Shaun Barnsley, and Vale Mayor and Consort Cllr Margaret Alexander and Bonnie Bellis.

Mayor of Barry Theo Strenstrom also attended later in the afternoon to judge the Teddy Bears Picnic, which drew more than 30 entries.

He also officiated in the grand prize draw. First prize of 200 went to Julia Wallace, second prize winner of 75 was Les Mills, and third prize winner of a 50 Blue Anchor meal voucher was T Thorne.

Entertainment was provided by Desert Divas, who drove the crowd crazy with their belly dancing under a marquee of coloured veils.

The Barry Brass Band and 372 Squadron also gave a wonderful display. South Wales Fire Service gave a display in the car park, and there were side stalls with bargains for all.

Early indications are that it will be another bumper fundraiser, with all monies used to provide additional comforts and equipment for patients and departments at the local hospital.

Mrs Fifield added: "I was overwhelmed by the support and sponsorship from local businesses and organisations in the area.
