Dragons set the league on fire

SULLY Dragons under-10s completed their best ever season with a successful and highly enjoyable end-of-season tour to compete in the Kirton In Lindsey Tournament.

This season saw the Dragons emerge as one of the leading football teams in the Vale League, winning 23 games, drawing three and losing three.

During these games they smashed home 98 League goals and conceded only 31.

The incredible progress of the team saw victories over many of the previous season's leading sides. The goal tally hit 120.

The season ended with a tour to Lincolnshire, where the party were welcomed before competing in an impromptu Wales vs England rounders challenge match on the village green.

With honours even, both camps retired in anticipation of the much awaited opening game.

This time the Dragons did Wales proud with a 1-0 win over their hosts, thanks to skillful wing play by James Chaffey and opportunism of Rob Jones, who scored the vital goal. This was followed by another 1-0 victory over the Useful Ousten Ferry.

After first half pressure, Rob Jones again put Dragons in front in a second half they dominated - until in the last minute Ousten were awarded a penalty due to the back pass rule.

Jordan Ferriday, however, pulled off an outstanding save to secure the victory.

With the Dragons passing game now in full flow, only a fine goalkeeping display from the Guinness Wasps B keeper prevented another Dragons win.

However a 0-0 draw maintained the unbeaten run, and straight after the Dragons stayed on to face the free-scoring Guinness Wasps A.

An end-to-end game competitive game followed with Elliott McAndrew nearly breaking the deadlock three times with fierce shots, but was denied by the post and good goalkeeping.

Just as another draw looked likely, the Wasps scrambled a late winner after a good move.

The Dragons bounced back with a 2-0 win over LHH Barton, with Adam Jones setting Max Bramhill up for a good goal and Rob Jones adding a second from a penalty. This was followed by a 2-0 victory in the final league game against Scotter Juniors.

Morgan Harris's determination and passing twice released Max Bramhill who clinically sealed the victory. This resulted in the Dragons finishing top of the seven-team group, and progressing to the semi-finals.

With the full support and vocal backing of the local Kirton team, the Dragons entertained Ousten Ferry.

Connor Kavangh'sa strength and astute defending ensured the dangerous Ousten striker was well contained, allowing the Dragons to dominate throughout normal and extra time.

A deserved breakthrough was denied by numerous good saves from the Ousten Keeper.

This forced the semi into the unknown territory of a penalty shoot-out.

Despite a good finish from Max and two brilliant saves from Jordan, the Dragons were cruelly denied a place in the final by the more experienced Ousten boys, who had lost a penalty shoot-out the previous week.

Throughout the tournament and tour, the boys were a credit to themselves, their parents and Sully Colts, with positive football, good sportsmanship and excellent behaviour. With one more tournament to play, the Dragons take a well deserved rest prior to next season.
