Bid to stop demolition

TWO Barry councillors have joined forces with The Friends of Cadoxton House, to stop the "much loved" property from being demolished by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Cadoc husband-and-wife councillors, Neil and Anne Moore, want Cadoxton House kept for the benefit of the East Barry community.

A demolition date has not yet been set, but the council says that the action is necessary, because the 120-year-old building has become too expensive to maintain.

Cadoxton House is currently being used as a community arts and education centre - the classes will be transferred to the Palmerston Centre.

Last year, four artists who teach at Cadoxton House formed Barry Community Arts in an attempt to ensure the continued use of the building.

Cllr Neil Moore said: "We are trying to obtain a stay of execution, so that Barry Community Arts can formulate a business plan and try and keep the centre open for their own and other community uses.

"We are hoping that with the help of our local assembly member, the Arts Council and the co-operation of the Vale Council, we can succeed."

He added: "We know that the building needs considerable investment, but we are convinced that given the support and a reasonable time to get things organised, everyone will be a winner when it stays open."

Vale operational manager David Prosser said: "The councils' Life-long Learning service has already indicated that it has no further use for the building, because of its current condition and the estimated cost of adaptation and repair.
