A SUEZ veteran who served in the Canal Zone between 1951 and 1953 was awarded a General Service Medal this week - 50 years after the conflict ended.
Ivor Lewis, aged 72, of Cwm Barry Way, was sent to Egypt along with about 80,000 others to protect British personnel and property from terror attacks.
During the emergency around 600 servicemen, who were classed as being on Active Service, died due to the actions of terrorists and ill health brought on by the unhygienic conditions.
No medal was awarded for the Active Service in this theatre of operation where the normal tour of duty was between 18 months and three years.
However, this decision was overturned on June 11, 2003, and Suez veterans are now able to apply for a Canal Zone Medal.
The medal is expected to generate the largest number of applications since Second World War.
Mr Lewis is delighted to have received his medal, but said: "The sad thing is that some parents didn't live to see their sons' sacrifices recognised by their country."
Applications from veterans, or the next of kin of those who have died, should be made in writing to: The Army Medal Office, Government Buildings, Worcester Road, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, WR9 88AU.
You should give your full name, date of birth and service number. All claims will be checked against official records to confirm eligibility.
