U-turn on ID

THE Lib Dems welcome John Smith"s opposition to Labour"s ill-considered ID Cards Bill. But why the U-turn?

Prior to the General Election, Mr Smith was in favour of ID cards, and voted with the Government to introduce the Bill just six months ago (Dec 20, 2004).

John"s "Damascus moment" clearly shows that this increasingly unpopular and dangerous Bill is a bigger issue than the Labour Party itself. Let"s hope he uses his influence to encourage other colleagues in the Commons to follow suit, and join Liberal Democrats and others saying "No!"
