Doug tribute

THE Vale of Glamorgan Labour Party pays tribute to Mr Doug Hawkins who sadly passed away recently at the age of 96.

Doug joined the Labour Party in 1922, making him a member for 81 years - certainly the longest serving member of the Labour Party in Wales if not the whole of the UK.

Doug"s political activities resulted in him receiving a merit award from Tony Blair at the 1995 Labour Party Conference.

Doug was born in Barry in 1908 and lived most of his life here, he was a member of the Buttrills Branch of the Labour Party, and was an avid attendee at meetings.

He will be remembered by us as a man who never stopped fighting for his beliefs, he was a true Socialist and environmentalist.

Over the years Doug inspired many of us in the Labour Party to be politically active, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for the knowledge and advice he passed on to us.

Doug and all he stood for will never be forgotten.

Cllr S Egan

Chairman Vale of Glamorgan Constituency Labour Party
