Centurions put plenty of runs on scoreboard

WHAT A frustrating season it is turning out to be for the majority of Sully Centurions players, with only one game out of four possible last Saturday.

The 1st XI entertained Usk at Sully, where once again the excellent drainage and the hard work by the groundsman ensured there was at least some cricket.

Centurions won the toss and elected to bat, and although the outfield was a little damp, the wicket was rock hard.

Ryan and Jamie Sylvester gave Sully just the start they needed, with 48 runs for the first wicket in 12 overs, before Ryan was bowled by Roderick for 36.

Gage, in his elevated position at number three, together with skipper Jamie, moved the score along to 91 at a steady pace before Jamie was caught off Watkin for 30.

Lloyd Smith and Gage kept up the good work, taking the score to 138, before Gage's excellent innings came to an end, caught and bowled by Tamplin for 47.

Smith took control, and with Newbold looking rock-solid, Centurions were looking at a big total as the scoreboard ticked over merrily and 66 runs were added before Smith, in excellent form, was bowled by Waters for a fine 44.

Newbold went for 29 and Evison and Eskins pushed the run rate up as Eskins turned the clock back with two flamboyant sixes over mid wicket.

Centurions posted a very useful total of 249-8 at the end of their 50 overs.

Usk got off to a brisk start, as some wayward bowling saw the visitors reach 50 off 12 overs. But as soon as Tamplin was run out by the brilliant Lloyd Smith, the whole tempo of the game changed.

Centurions were in total control and Usk shut up shop. The match became a poor spectacle for spectators, as Sully reduced Usk to 123-6 before Watkins and Waters completely dropped anchor and the last 11 overs produced just 30 runs.

Centurions used seven bowlers in an attempt to get the visitors out, but the match ended with Usk on 155-6.

Centurions 249-8. N Gage 47, L Smith 44, R Sylvester 36, J Sylvester 30, M Newbold 29. O Watkins 3-52, J Roderick 2-46.

Usk 155-6. I Clayton 39, O Watkins 23 no. J Sylvester 3-19.
