Owners ignore dog beach ban

DOG owners in the Vale of Glamorgan are ignoring notices that ban their pets from the county's beaches, according to some local residents.

Dogs are banned from beaches in Barry Island, Cold Knap, Penarth, Llantwit Major and Southerndown from May 1 to September 30 each year - those who flout the ban risk a 1,000 fine.

Banning notices have been erected at the entrance to all of the beaches, but it appears that some dog owners are choosing to ignore them.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "My husband and I take our grandchildren to Barry Island beach at least three times a week, and we encounter dogs on every occasion - sometimes as many as five."

She added: "When we approach the dog owners, some claim not to have seen the sign."

A spokeswoman for the Vale of Glamorgan Council said the council had not received any complaints about the visibility of the signs.
