Dog days

THE recent hot weather had been well trailed by the forecasters, which led to a predictable stampede to the Vale"s lovely beaches.

At Llantwit Major the crowds were treated to the spectacle of a major surfboard competition which was spoilt only by the large number of dogs taken onto the beach by thoughtless owners.

Coupled with the chip wrappers and drink cans discarded by a tiny proportion of the visitors, many questioned why the council had not provided any of their Control Officers to prosecute offenders.

Even some of the high-quality surfboard competitors took their dogs with them on the long walk to the sea, not withstanding the several No Dogs Allowed signs prominently displayed.

With a stated maximum fine of £1,000 the council could easily have covered the cost to provide this much-needed public service.
